Reaching for the celestial kingdom: representation of toxic masculinity in under the banner of heaven / Soraya

Abstrak
Audio visual media like films and television series can be critical and powerful representations of social realities. In this sense contemporary American television series is among those that represent and potentially shape social values and ideas. In this paper the writer is interested in examining the representation of gender in Dustin Lance Black rsquo s crime drama series Under the Banner of Heaven. As the series critiques the role of religion in shaping a community rsquo s ideas of gender the writer would like to offer insights on how religion is used to justify toxic masculinity practices. The series explores the lives of a fundamentalist Mormons society. It is in the depiction of their everyday life that the series highlights the danger of uncritical adherence of religion including its construction of gender ideals. I argue that in this series religion plays major roles in shaping the social construction of ideal masculinity patriarchal interest groups tend to use biased interpretation of religion to justify their toxic masculine behavior. In this paper the writer attempt to untangle the complicated threads of patriarchal authority emotional suppression and gender-based violence that run through the fabric of Fundamentalist Mormon society. This study employs Fairclough rsquo s CDA threedimensional analysis framework to reveal the underlying ideologies and power dynamics embedded in the series narrative structure.
