Abstrak
The wealthiest Americans are often celebrated for generosity shown through significant donations. However the true motivation behind their actions remains to be seen whether they are driven by altruism or simply for personal gain. In this case stand-up comedy is one medium that allows social actors to expose pressing social issues in a way that educates and encourages critical reflection. This research aims to uncover discourse related to billionaire philanthropy in Hasan Minhaj s stand-up comedy titled Why Billionaires Won t Save Us. This special episode criticizes how the donation patterns of the top richest people in the United States focus on individual projects and personal branding. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method by applying Norman Fairclough s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective to analyze and understand the mechanism of this discourse. This allows the researcher to uncover the ideology underlying the representation of billionaire philanthropy as well as the power dynamics between the comedian audiences and mass media and how these contribute to the construction of social reality. This research data is in the form of a transcript of Hasan Minhaj s performance which is segmented according to data needs. The techniques used are observing and interpreting the data by analyzing the text discourse practice and sociocultural practice. As a result this research shows that the philanthropic motives of ultra-wealthy individuals are not always altruistic. Their donations are considered to have negative impacts on society. This research contributes to a more informed discussion on the role of philanthropy in addressing global challenges. Furthermore Hasan Minhaj reflects on whether government regulations on philanthropy are fair and transparent.
