The increasing popularity of ChatGPT has presented opportunities and challenges for language education. ChatGPT offers tools that can help ELE students complete their academic writing assignments by providing instant feedback and generating writing prompts. UM ELE students often face challenges in meeting academic writing requirements as well as the complexity of writing in non-native languages making ChatGPT both potentially helpful and controversial in the academic community. This research explored Universitas Negeri Malang ELE students perception and view of ChatGPT in the academic writing context. A quantitative survey design using online questionnaires via Google Forms was employed and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework was adopted. The research focuses on finding out the usefulness ease of use and user acceptance. There were 90 UM ELE students who completed the questionnaire for this study. The results showed a favorable opinion of both the usefulness and the ease but 62.2% of students had a negative intention of using ChatGPT in their academic writing activities. Factors that contribute to this outcome are the student s awareness of the shortcomings of AI its limitations related to the ethics of academic writing and institutions that do not have clear regulations regarding this matter.
