Abstrak
Morphosyntactic awareness is a critical component of metalinguistic awareness as it enables learners to analyze and manipulate linguistic structures enhancing their overall language proficiency. This study investigated the metalinguistic awareness of students in bilingual and international class programs (ICP) in Indonesia focusing on morphosyntactic awareness. This study employed quantitative approach with a descriptive-comparative design the research assessed students rsquo metalinguistic awareness to identify and explain grammatical rules through Grammatical Judgment Tasks test of morphological and sentence corrections. This study employed purposive sampling since the participants selected by using the Expressive Vocabulary Test Second Edition (EVT-2) ensuring a representative sample of each class. The participant were ten sixth-grade students from bilingual and international class programs. The results showed that bilingual class program struggled with simple present tense and numerical grammar while ICP faced difficulties with superlative degree simple present tense and present continuous tense. Additionally ICP outperformed their bilingual counterparts in morphological tasks related to word derivation and decomposition. The study suggests that ICP foster stronger morphosyntactic and metalinguistic awareness while bilingual programs require targeted support in specific grammatical areas to boost their metalinguistic awareness. This study implies the need for different teaching approaches for appropriating to the linguistic needs of students in each program particularly focusing on their specific grammatical weaknesses for metalinguistic awareness.
