Memorizing the eleventh graders’ english vocabulary by utilizing visual mnemonic strategy / Ayu Reza Defita Sari
Abstrak
Vocabulary is needed to support various skills in language learning. Therefore it is important for language learners to master vocabulary as a first step. The lack of vocabulary mastery in high school is an obstacle for students in understanding explanations from English teachers it causes a decrease in learning outcomes and a lack of student motivation to learn which has an impact on students low memory in memorizing vocabulary. This research aims to show that the implementation of visual mnemonic strategies is effective in helping eleventh-grade students improve their vocabulary mastery. The method used in this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) the research subjects were class XI-2 students consisting of 34 students 12 male and 22 female. Treatment was given in one cycle which includes four stages in each cycle. There are four meetings in one cycle. Then there are 4 instruments used by researchers in research including interviews vocabulary tests observation cheklist and questionnaires. Cycle I has four meeting the result of cycle I showed there is improvement of the students rsquo vocabulary mastery. The average pre-test score was 57.65 while the average post-test score was 90.15. There was an increase of 32.5 from the pre-test to the post-test. The findings in this research show that the visual mnemonic strategy with pictures as a media effective helps eleventh grade students to improve their vocabulary mastery and the students responded positively to the implementation of visual mnemonic strategies in vocabulary learning.
