Designing lms-based esp course: a pathway to enhancing self-efficacy and learning outcomes for islamic undergraduate students / Dewi Hidayati

Hidayati, Dewi - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
The landscape of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) education within Islamic undergraduate studies particularly in Syariah Economics is still underdeveloped and faces multiple challenges that demand focused investigation. Islamic higher education institutions in Indonesia including STAI Diponegoro Tulungagung encounter unique difficulties in offering ESP courses that cater to both the academic demands of specialized subjects and the students cultural and religious needs. While English language proficiency is increasingly recognized as essential for academic and professional success existing ESP courses often lack integration with the specific needs of students studying Syariah Economics leading to a disconnect between the language skills being taught and the application of those skills in the context of the field. Furthermore despite efforts to incorporate technology into the learning process many institutions still face challenges in implementing effective digital learning environments that fully support the diverse learning preferences and engagement needs of students. The current educational practices often overlook the importance of aligning course content with the values and principles of Islamic studies leaving a gap in how English for Syariah Economics is taught. This gap highlights the necessity of a more comprehensive and tailored approach to course design particularly in the context of developing Learning Management System (LMS)-based courses that address both linguistic and cultural dimensions. The urgency to bridge these gaps is heightened by the growing demand for graduates who are not only proficient in English but also capable of effectively applying their language skills in their specialized fields making it imperative to provide students with the tools they need to thrive in both academic and professional spheres. This study therefore aims to explore how an LMS-based ldquo English for Syariah Economics rdquo course can effectively enhance students self-efficacy and learning outcomes addressing these critical challenges within the Islamic undergraduate context. This research aims to explore and address several key issues within the educational context of STAI Diponegoro Tulungagung. First it seeks to examine the specific learning needs preferences and challenges that Islamic undergraduate students encounter while studying English in the Syariah Economics domain. Understanding these needs is essential to designing a course that effectively engages students and enhances their learning outcomes. The study then focuses on designing and developing a tailored LMS-based course that responds to these identified needs. By utilizing the ADDIE model (Analysis Design Development Implementation and Evaluation) this research will systematically approach the design and development process ensuring that the course is both pedagogically sound and technologically effective. The final objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of the LMS-based course in fostering improvements in students rsquo self-efficacy and learning outcomes particularly in relation to their ability to engage with and perform in the specialized domain of Syariah Economics. In the first stage of the ADDIE model Analysis the research involved a survey of 38 Islamic undergraduate students focusing on their learning preferences specific language needs and preferred modes of instruction. This survey revealed critical insights into the challenges these students face including the need for culturally relevant content an interactive learning environment and a course structure that integrates religious and academic principles. The findings also indicated that students preferred learning that connected directly to their field of study highlighting the importance of discipline-specific language and context. During the Design phase the research team used the survey results to develop the blueprint for the LMS-based ldquo English for Syariah Economics rdquo course. This phase involved specifying the course content instructional materials and the pedagogical approach. The course design integrated interactive elements such as case studies discussion forums and multimedia resources to ensure engagement while remaining aligned with Islamic values and Syariah Economics principles. Emphasis was placed on creating a collaborative learning environment that encouraged peer interaction and knowledge-sharing reflecting the cultural context of Islamic studies. In the Development stage the course content was created and uploaded to the LMS platform. The team collaborated with content experts to develop materials that not only covered Syariah Economics but also addressed language acquisition needs ensuring that all materials were accessible engaging and supportive of the students rsquo learning styles. Special attention was given to developing assessments that would measure both language proficiency and the application of economic concepts within the Syariah framework. During the Implementation phase the course was introduced to the 35 students and initial feedback was collected through surveys and direct observations. The feedback highlighted that students appreciated the user-friendly interface of the LMS and the relevance of the content to their academic needs. However challenges such as limited access to technological resources particularly internet connectivity affected some students rsquo ability to fully engage with the course materials. These issues were identified as significant barriers to effective learning and underscored the need for enhanced infrastructure and support mechanisms. Finally in the Evaluation phase both formative and summative assessments were used to measure the course s effectiveness in improving students self-efficacy and learning outcomes. Results indicated that students experienced significant gains in both areas with improvements in language proficiency and increased self-reported confidence in using English within the context of Syariah Economics. The course successfully addressed the identified gaps in language learning and provided students with the necessary skills to navigate academic and professional environments related to their field. The implications of this study are multifaceted. The research highlights the importance of integrating both pedagogical strategies and technological considerations when designing ESP courses especially in specialized fields like Syariah Economics. The findings emphasize the need for universities to adopt tailored approaches to course design ensuring that both content and delivery methods align with the unique cultural and academic needs of students. Furthermore the study underscores the potential of LMS-based platforms to facilitate interactive and engaging learning experiences provided that the technical infrastructure supports equitable access for all students. The study rsquo s limitations however must be acknowledged. Technical barriers such as internet connectivity issues and access to modern digital devices affected some students rsquo ability to fully benefit from the course. Additionally the course was implemented within a single institution limiting the generalizability of the findings. Future research could expand the scope by exploring the integration of similar courses in other Islamic universities across Indonesia or other countries with similar educational contexts. Overall this research contributes to the growing body of knowledge in ESP education by demonstrating how the integration of technology and discipline-specific content can significantly enhance student learning outcomes and self-efficacy. The success of the LMS-based course in Syariah Economics offers valuable insights for the design of future ESP courses not only in Islamic studies but also in other specialized academic fields.
