Correlation between listening proficiency and listening strategies employed by students of english language teaching of Universitas Negeri Malang / Choirul Dwi Setiawan

Abstrak
Listening is the very first essential foundation of learning a language and in order to have an effective communication. English language learners need to master linguistic and non-linguistic knowledge to have a good listening skill. The first problem in listening is the quality of recorded material. The second problem is due to the cultural differences. The third problem is related to accent. The next obstacle is vocabulary. The last problem that the students face is the length and speed of audio. There are two kinds of cognitive strategy in listening they are bottom-up and top-down. Referring to the background of the study the aim of this study is to find the correlation between students rsquo listening proficiency and students rsquo listening strategies. This research was conducted by using correlational research design. The population of this research was English language teaching (ELT) students of Universitas Negeri Malang. The sampling method of this research was purposive sampling. The sample criteria to be chosen is ELT 2016 students. The samples involved in this research was 48 students. The instrument of this study was listening strategy questionnaire called Strategic Listening Questionnaire (SLQ). The data of this research was described using descriptive statistical analysis. Moreover the data was presented in the form of table and scatter diagram. The SPSS 23 was used to compute and correlate the data. The finding showed that the correlation resulted in negative coefficient which meant there was no correlation between listening strategy and listening proficiency. Students with low intermediate and high listening scores obtained random and various listening strategy questionnaire scores. Students with low score could get high score in listening strategy questionnaire. Meanwhile some students with intermediate and high scores obtained low score of listening strategy questionnaire. Hence the correlation coefficient was -.127 that meant there was no correlation between students rsquo listening strategies and students rsquo listening proficiency.
