Exploring efl freshmen\'s perceptions and their anxiety levels towards the usage of digital-authentic materials for english reading comprehension: a survey research / Winda Nur Rahmania Iskandar
Abstrak
This study investigates the perceptions anxiety levels challenges and coping strategies of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) freshmen in engaging with digital-authentic materials for reading comprehension. These materials refer to real-world resources created for non-pedagogical purposes. The research employs a survey design incorporating quantitative data from 153 participants and qualitative data from open-ended questions. The data were analysed using statistical methods for the quantitative results and thematic analysis for the qualitative responses. The findings reveal that students generally possess a positive perception of digital-authentic materials acknowledging their potential to enhance vocabulary and reading skills. However the study highlights medium levels of reading anxiety primarily caused by unfamiliar vocabulary cultural references and complex text structures. The thematic analysis identifies vocabulary difficulties text structure issues and cultural challenges as significant obstacles alongside technical and distraction-related issues. Students utilize various coping strategies including reading comprehension techniques vocabulary acquisition efforts and leveraging digital tools. Despite challenges students rsquo overall perception remains favorable with anxiety levels not significantly hindering their engagement. These findings underscore the need for instructional strategies that address the identified difficulties while optimizing the benefits of digital-authentic materials for EFL learning
