Evolution and transformation of thorfinn karlsefni in anime vinland saga / Muhammad Iqbal Devanto
Abstrak
Anime is an animated literary work that covers many genres. One unique anime Vinland Saga includes the historical action genre with a Viking background. Vinland Saga centers on Thorfinn Karlsefni rsquo s character development with elements of drama and adventure. This research analyzes Thorfinn rsquo s journey using James Marcia s identity theory (1980) which includes four stages identity diffusion foreclosure moratorium and identity achievement. As a child Thorfinn admired his father but his development began when his father was killed by Askeladd. Thorfinn s early life revolves around revenge on Askeladd which ends in vain as Askeladd dies at the hands of others. Thorfinn faced emotional struggles and moral dilemmas with no purpose left but in the end he finally chose peace and settled with his identity. In conclusion this research discovers that Thorfinn Karlsefni rsquo s character arc in Vinland Saga reflects James Marcia rsquo s identity stages illustrating his complex development from a vengeful child to a mature self-reflective person and how the plot navigates Thorfinn to find his true self.
