Abstrak
The preliminary study on grade VII in a state secondary school in Malang showed that 24 out of 32 students (75%) scored below 70 on the reading test which indicated low reading comprehension of descriptive texts. In addition the teacher provided a lack of learning media to students. Thus the purpose of this study is to improve seventh graders rsquo reading comprehension of descriptive texts utilizing Google Sites. This study employed the classroom action research model by Kemmis and McTaggart (1988). To collect the data the researcher used interviews and the reading test in the preliminary study and reading tests questionnaires observation sheets and teacher rsquo s notes in the implementation. The data were analyzed based on criteria of success namely 75% of students scored a minimum of 70 and stated positive responses to Google Sites. The results showed only 20 students (62.5%) achieved this score in cycle I. After an improvement in the material and teaching strategy in cycle II 26 students (81.25%) finally scored 70 or more. This indicated a significant improvement in students rsquo reading comprehension. Simplified materials and group work strategy encouraged collaboration and a deeper understanding of descriptive texts. Students showed positive responses to Google Sites. However there are limitations in terms of devices and internet access when accessing Google Sites. In conclusion Google Sites can be a learning medium to improve students reading comprehension skills for descriptive texts by paying attention to devices and internet access.
