Non-english graduate teacher cognition in teaching english vocabulary to the fourth graders / Rahmawati Arjunaputri
Abstrak
This qualitative case study investigates a non-English graduate teacher s cognition in teaching English vocabulary to the fourth graders. The participants were a homeroom teacher and 27 fourth-grade students of a public elementary school in Malang East Java Indonesia. The study used semi-structured interviews observation field notes focus group interviews and document analysis to explore the teacher rsquo s knowledge and beliefs about teaching English vocabulary to the fourth graders and the students rsquo opinions of the vocabulary teaching done by the teacher. The findings revealed that the teacher was aware of teaching English vocabulary by learning from other teachers on social media such as Instagram and by learning with the students. The teacher taught using fun activities such as games videos and songs suited to the emancipated curriculum and the students rsquo needs. As a result students had varied opinions of the vocabulary teaching with most expressing joy and enthusiasm. However most struggled with anxiety restricted vocabulary and pronunciation. This study rsquo s limitations include its focus on teaching English vocabulary and its limited scope to a specific class. Future research should use a case study approach for bigger participants and explore other English skills or components as well as the vocabulary aspect.
