Types and causes of students’ errors in writing a descriptive essay / Nicky Merry Bidadari
Abstrak
One of the English skills that junior high school students need to learn is writing a descriptive essay. They however consistently make errors in grammar indicating that they still have inadequate grammatical competence. This study is aimed at identifying the types of errors made by students in writing a descriptive essay and the possible causes of these errors. This study used a qualitative approach to integrate the data of students errors with their possible causes of errors. The data sources used were students descriptive essay writing and interviews. Data from students writings were analyzed to classify the types of errors the number of errors and the example of each type. In addition data from interviews were used to describe the possible causes of students errors in writing. Based on Brown s classification it was found that the most common type of error was substitution as many as 233 (42.5%) followed by omission 219 (39.9%) addition 55 (10.1%) and permutation 41 (7.5%) with a total of 548 errors. Meanwhile these errors are possible due to L1 transfer interlanguage transfer context of learning and language exposure. For further research more structured interview instruments can be developed through trials to ensure the instruments used can produce more comprehensive data.
