Developing english speaking materials for the students of chemistry industry using the ctl approach / Nila Swandari

Abstrak
Language is a means of communication and the main objective of teaching and learning a language is to enable the learner to communicate. Speaking is an essential skill enabling learners to communicate in English in the workplace. The students at the Vocational high school in the Chemistry Industry Department are highly required to speak English fluently and communicatively to prepare them for their future careers. This study aims to develop English Speaking materials for vocational students in the Chemistry Industry Department using the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Approach. It employs the Research and Development proposed by Borg amp Gall (2003) which consists of several research steps need assessment material design expert validation product revision step I material try-out and the final product revision. The needs assessment investigated the students and English teacher at the Chemistry Industry Department SMK PGRI 3 Malang and the professional teacher at the Chemistry Industry Department using observation and interview. The need assessment resulted in the material contents map the teaching method the assessment and the suggested CTL learning implementation. Fun Being Alchemist a supplementary speaking course book is created according to the needs assessment recommendations. The course book comprises five units How can I help you Dealing with Scientific Literature At the Conference At the Showcase and Keeping in Touch. The course book is accompanied by a teacher s guidebook that guides teachers in utilizing the course book. The materials underwent several revisions from experts in English Language Teaching experienced English teachers and suggestions after the material try-out. The final course book evaluation shows the students positive attitudes toward implementing the course book.
