Literature plays a significant role in reflecting the social and cultural realities of a nation including in fostering historical awareness among the younger generation. Burung-Burung Manyar a novel by Y.B. Mangunwijaya is a work rich in socio-cultural dynamics within the historical context of Indonesia from 1934 to 1978. This study aims to examine the reconciliation of historical events and fiction during the Dutch and Japanese colonial periods the Indonesian War of Independence and the conflict between tradition and modernity as well as to analyze the socio-cultural values contained in the novel using a literary sociology approach. The results of the analysis reveal four main socio-cultural values in the novel moral values (honesty politeness justice empathy) responsibility (mutual cooperation awareness struggle) love and affection and religiosity (gratitude and obedience). Among these responsibility is the most dominant value while religiosity appears the least. These findings indicate that Burung-Burung Manyar holds great potential as a teaching material for history education as it can enhance students rsquo understanding of historical dynamics and help instill values that foster patriotism among the younger generation.
