The effect of using authentic materials to enhance students\' reading comprehension achievement / Nida Nafisah

Abstrak
Reading proficiency is one of needed skills in mastering a language including English. However many senior high school students have some problems in reading and understanding narrative text due to limited background knowledge and vocabulary (Rizqon et al 2021). Hence the selection of appropriate teaching materials is important to facilitate the students learning experiences. One of the method is the use of authentic material which are a material created by native speaker in their natural context. Previous studies suggest that using this type of material make the students seeing the practical application of the language in real-world contexts which increases their willingness to learn. Despite those positive effects most previous research has mainly using qualitative methodologies which is insightful however do not provide clear quantitative data on students rsquo reading achievement scores. Additionally these studies rarely use analytical exposition texts potentially limiting the perceived effectiveness of the material in this context. To address these gaps this study employs a pre-experimental design to quantitatively investigate the effect of authentic materials on senior high school students rsquo reading achievement. Further this research include questionnaire to capture the students rsquo perception of authentic materials. This research was conducted in a senior high school in Situbondo East Java. XI Science 2 class which consists of 21 students was chosen as the subject of the research due to the limitation of the sample size locations and the result of discussion with the teacher. On the first meeting pre-test was administered as the data of students rsquo early reading achievement score. Afterward the treatment was conducted on the second to the fifth meeting and the post-test was administered on the last meeting along with the questionnaires to know their perception. The result of pre-test and posted were compared and analyzed using t-test. Meanwhile the result of the questionnaire was analyzed through Microsoft Excel. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students reading achievement scores with post-test averages markedly higher than pre-test scores. The t-test results confirm that the improvement is statistically significant. Furthermore the questionnaire results reveal that most students found authentic materials engaging and beneficial for their learning. Based on those finding it can be concluded that authentic material is suitable for increasing students rsquo reading achievement. However this study has several limitations. It was conducted in a single location with limited duration which might affect the result. Hence it is suggested for future researcher to include a larger and more diverse sample size to enhance the generalizability of the finding.
