Facility layout evaluation of the meat preparation (mp) departement at pt phalosari unggul jaya using the activity relationship chart and from-to chart methods / Mayang Firki Afridasari

Abstrak
Improving the effectiveness and efficiency of production processes is essential for any manufacturing company including through optimizing the facility layout. An inefficient layout can lead to several issues such as the reversal of material flow to earlier steps in the process and excessive material movement. PT Phalosari Unggul Jaya a meat processing company based in Jombang is currently facing such issues as the facility layout in its Meat Preparation Department has never been formally evaluated. Observations revealed that the current layout causes unnecessary material movement due to the improper placement of workstations that do not follow the production flow. This study aims to evaluate the existing layout and suggest an improved layout to reduce material handling distance and enhance operational efficiency. The research uses two methods the Activity Relationship Chart (ARC) to analyze the closeness between workstations and the From-To Chart (FTC) to calculate material travel distances layout efficiency and the percentage of forward and backward flow in each layout alternative. The research consists of three main stages analyzing the existing layout designing layout alternatives and evaluating the proposed layouts. A backward flow is identified when materials are routed back to a previous stage in the production process indicating inefficiency in layout design. In this study two alternative layout designs were successfully developed and evaluated against the existing layout based on three key parameters total material handling distance layout efficiency and the percentage of forward and backward flows. While both proposed layouts showed greater efficiency than the existing configuration Layout 2 proved to be the most effective overall. The findings of this study indicate that both alternative layout designs are more efficient than the existing layout particularly in reducing material handling distances. In Proposed Layout 1 the total material handling distance was reduced from 285.65 meters to 229.32 meters and layout efficiency increased from 24.49% to 32.09%. The percentage of forward flow also increased from 67% to 95.69% while the backward flow decreased from 32.91% to 4.31%. In Proposed Layout 2 the material handling distance was further reduced to 204.53 meters and the layout efficiency increased to 32.91%. The forward flow improved from 67% to 94.20% while the backward flow decreased to 5.80%. Therefore Proposed Layout 2 is recommended as the optimal solution to enhance operational efficiency in the Meat Preparation Department.
