The relationship between narcissism and contract cheating among accounting students / Nur Azizah
Abstrak
The growing occurrences of contract cheating have prompted the need for research into underlying personality factors such as narcissism. This study aims to determine the relationship between narcissism and contract cheating among accounting students considering gender as a potential moderating variable. A total of 152 accounting students from the University of Malang class of 2021 ndash 2022 participated in the study by completing a questionnaire. Moderated regression analysis (MRA) revealed a positive correlation between narcissism and contract cheating. Individuals with high levels of narcissism tend to be more permissive toward such behavior. The most dominant indicators of narcissism were exploitativeness and exhibitionism reflecting a tendency to exploit others and a need for recognition. However gender does not moderate the relationship between narcissism and contract cheating males simply exhibit a higher tendency to engage in it. These results support the relevance of Social Cognitive Theory and Social Role Theory in explaining academic cheating behavior.
