The challenges and strategies in localizing humor in honkai: star rail video game into indonesian / Zhidan Ronald Delpiero
Abstrak
This study aims to investigate the challenges and the strategies used by Indonesian localizers to localize the humorous content from English to Indonesian in the video game Honkai Star Rail. Given the global expanding video game industry localization is essential to make video games reach different target language audiences. The study uses a comparative analysis method to examine the humor content in English and Indonesian versions. The findings indicate the challenges Indonesian localizers faced in the localization process which are finding equivalent humor adding humor and changing humor expression. The finding also shows that the Indonesian localizer uses strategies such as recreating wordplay using local internet memes and jokes and using local expressions to localize the humor in the Indonesian version of the game. These findings highlight the importance of considering cultural and linguistic factors to maintain and enhance the translated humor for the Indonesian audience. This research not only contributes to filling the gap in the research regarding the Indonesian localization of humor in video games but the research also provides insight to the Indonesian localizer on the recommendation strategies for future video game localization.
