Efl students\' adoption and perceptions of chatbot-assisted academic writing / Septi Rahmayanti

Rahmayanti, Septi - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) has led to significant changes in education particularly with the introduction of chatbots like ChatGPT and others from companies such as Google and Microsoft. These tools are increasingly used in language learning and academic writing offering benefits such as content organization and draft creation. However concerns arise about the reliability of information over-reliance on AI and potential plagiarism. While chatbots provide personalized learning and immediate feedback their integration into language education requires careful consideration to balance technology with traditional teaching methods. Students perceptions of AI tools like chatbots play a crucial role in their adoption and effective use. Despite the growing interest in using AI in language education research specifically on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students rsquo attitude toward chatbot-assisted academic writing is lacking. Most studies focus on general educational applications leaving a gap in understanding the student rsquo s adoption and perception of chatbot use in academic writing. Addressing this gap is important for improving chatbot technology and better integrating it into language instruction particularly for enhancing academic writing skills among EFL students. This study reveals a strong positive attitude among participants toward using chatbots with 80% expressing comfort and acceptance. However their perspectives differ depending on the chatbot rsquo s role showing varying attitudes between its use as a learning tool and as an assistant for completing assignments. While EFL learners widely use chatbots in stages like planning drafting and proofreading they are less frequently used for formatting and citation due to technological limitations. Postgraduate students find chatbots beneficial for improving writing quality and efficiency but remain cautious about AI-generated content preferring personal control over tasks like editing. The study highlights the need to incorporate user feedback into AI tool design and for educators to help students balance AI assistance with critical thinking. Overall the positive reception suggests a high likelihood of future adoption despite current limitations.
