The Role of The Dominant Language in The Linguistic Landscape of Kayutangan Heritage as a Tourism Area in Malang, Indonesia / Nadia Sabilla Ramadhani
Abstrak
Language diversity reflects a city conscious of globalization and modernity in society yet local languages must still be preserved for instance in the city s linguistic landscape. This article analyses the role of the dominant language using Landry and Bourhis theory of linguistic landscape in the Kayutangan Heritage Malang City Indonesia. The aim of this research is to analyze the use of language that appears most on public signs in the Kayutangan Heritage area as a form of language dominance that is often used by people in Malang City and the role of each dominating language. The research focused on any visible linguistic landscape in the Kayutangan Heritage from the main road to inside the alleys. The role of each dominant language in the Kayutangan Heritage has various impacts on the information and symbol functions in Landry and Bourhis theory. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach by including 283 photos of the linguistic landscape. The analysis revealed the role of the dominant languages in the Kayutangan are Indonesian-English as modern socio-cultural representation Indonesian as the national and formal language English as an international and modern language Javanese as a local language and the Foreign languages as the identity construction of commercial purpose. These languages coexist as a form of linguistic diversity that occurs in Kayutangan Heritage. Other than these three languages other foreign languages are only able to characterize some business places around the Kayutangan Heritage area Malang.
