Abstrak
Manga has evolved into a unique theme that combines narratives and cooking instructions to tell a story. This genre becomes a medium of learning that gives culinary arts knowledge through its stories involving texts and visuals. Since manga is a multimodal medium with text and visuals to convey meaning this study aims to analyze how the text and visuals complement each other to enhance the narrative and functional contents. This study analyzed Emiya San Chi No Kyou Gohan since the manga tells a story about Emiya Shirou who always cooks various Japanese foods in every chapter. This study analyzed Chapter 12 which shows the cooking process of a hot pot. Since it presents many ingredients and preparations the chapter offers a long detailed sequence to examine. This study applies Royce s intersemiotic complementarity framework to understand the interaction of text and visuals in the manga panels. The data collected were categorized based on the interaction of text and visuals on repetition synonymy antonymy hyponymy meronymy and collocation. The findings of this study showed that both text and visuals in Chapter 12 were managed into three categories repetition meronymy and synonymy. The results suggested that these three categories can enhance clarity and make the instructions easier to follow while maintaining an entertaining narrative. Repetition is suitable to explain simple cooking steps and ingredients. Meronymy helps to explain the complex cooking process. Furthermore synonymy ensures that the text and visuals convey the same meaning even though they are expressed differently.
