Abstrak
This study aims to analyze the use of appraisal language in online newspaper editorials discussing the cancellation of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia. It focuses on three prominent Indonesian newspapers The Jakarta Post Kompas and Media Indonesia. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method to examine how these editorials frame the issue. The data consists of editorial texts from each publication which are deconstructed into clauses and analyzed using Martin and White rsquo s (2005) appraisal framework particularly focusing on judgement (evaluations of human behavior) and appreciation (assessments of events and objects). The findings reveal that all three editorials express a predominantly negative perception of the tournament rsquo s cancellation criticizing the decision and its implications for Indonesia rsquo s international reputation. The language used reflects disappointment frustration and disapproval indicating a shared stance among the editors. However subtle differences in tone and emphasis are observed The Jakarta Post employs a strong evaluative language while Kompas and Media Indonesia adopt a more diplomatic critique. This study contributes to discourse analysis by highlighting how media framing influences public perception of controversial events. It also underscores the role of editorials in shaping opinions on socio-political issues in Indonesia.
