Abstrak
This study examines the correlation between EFL students reading stories habits (variable X) and their motivation in reading comprehension (variable Y). This study examines the relationship between the reading stories habits of EFL students of Universitas Negeri Malang cohort 2023 and their motivation to read stories. The research sample consists of 17 English Literature students who share the same characteristics as the research population which comprises 123 students enrolled in the English Language Education program. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design employing a closed-ended questionnaire as the primary instrument to measure the frequency and nature of students reading stories habits as well as their level of motivation in reading comprehension. The types of stories read by participants include short stories fairy tales folk tales novels and fictional narratives mostly in English. Data were analyzed using Pearson s product-moment correlation coefficient which showed a very strong and positive correlation between the two variables (r 0.970 p lt 0.01). Additionally the coefficient of determination (R sup2 0.942) indicated that students reading stories habits explained 94.2% of the variation in their reading motivation. These findings suggest that students who frequently read English-language narrative texts tend to have higher motivation in reading comprehension. Therefore it is recommended that lecturer continue to encourage the habit of reading stories particularly fictional and narrative texts to support students motivation and comprehension skills in the context of learning English as a foreign language (EFL).
