Apology strategies in Indonesian elt coursebooks: examining context, emotion, and cultural alignment / Dinda Bunga Shabrina

Shabrina, Dinda Bunga - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
This study investigates the representation of apology strategies in two Indonesian English language teaching (ELT) coursebooks English for Nusantara (Grade VIII) and Life Today (Grade XII) both published by the Ministry of Education Culture Research and Technology. Employing a qualitative content analysis the research systematically identified and categorized apology strategies based on the frameworks of Olshtain and Cohen (1983) and Blum-Kulka House and Kasper (1989). The analysis focused on the frequency types and contextual characteristics of apology expressions considering social relationships situational settings and emotional tone. The findings indicate that apology strategies in the textbooks are limited in variety and predominantly direct in form particularly Illocutionary Force Indicating Devices (IFIDs) and Explicit Self-blame. Other important strategies such as Explanation of Account and Refusal to Acknowledge Guilt were absent. Moreover the strategies were mainly situated in informal peer contexts with minimal social or cultural variation. No clear progression was found between junior and senior high school textbooks in terms of strategy complexity or diversity. These results suggest that the analyzed textbooks insufficiently foster pragmatic competence especially regarding the appropriate and context-sensitive use of apology expressions. To address this gap it is recommended that coursebook authors and educators enrich materials with a wider range of apology strategies that are contextually and culturally responsive. Such revisions would better align with the goals of the Merdeka Curriculum and the Pancasila Student Profile which emphasize intercultural understanding and holistic student development.
