Effect of wordwall guessing games on the eighth-grade students’ skills in describing people / Nisrina Nabila Salma

Abstrak
Speaking is one of the language skills that is challenging for Indonesian EFL learners due to their limited vocabulary low self-confidence and fear of making mistakes. This research examines if there is an impact of Wordwall guessing game on the eighth-grade EFL students rsquo speaking skills focusing on describing physical characteristics. Using a quasi-experimental design 59 students at a junior high school in Malang City were divided into an experimental group which engaged in four sessions of the games and a control group participated in conventional method. The study hypothesized that students using Wordwall guessing games would demonstrate significantly higher gains in speaking proficiency compared to those using conventional methods. Statistical analyses including ANCOVA revealed no statistically significant difference in speaking proficiency between the experimental and control groups (p .521) both groups showed significant improvement. Therefore the null hypothesis cannot be rejected. However significant differences were observed in the pre-test and post-test scores for both groups underscoring the effectiveness of both the Wordwall guessing games and the conventional method in enhancing EFL speaking proficiency. In addition the results demonstrated considerable improvements in the experimental group s vocabulary fluency grammar and pronunciation. Questionnaire responses indicated that students found the games effective and enjoyable supporting interactive learning. The study recommends integrating digital guessing games into EFL curricula and suggests further research use larger more diverse samples and longer interventions to better assess both immediate sustained effects and relevance to other language skills.
