The role of intensity of social media use on empathy in adolescents / Ashifa Amanda
Abstrak
Empathy is crucial for adolescent socioemotional development. Low empathy is also associated with various aggressive/delinquent behaviors among adolescents. This is supported by data showing that many adolescents engage in actions that harm others. Empathy can be shaped by several factors including emotional control cognitive and affective development formal and non-formal education and the individual s social environment. In this digital era social media become a part of an individual s social environment. Social media is a platform for communication interaction building social relationships and sharing information. Therefore the purpose of this study is to examine the role of social media usage intensity on empathy in adolescents. This study used a quantitative correlational approach. Participants in this study were adolescents aged 10-18 who used social media. The research sample was collected using a purposive sampling technique. The study obtained 107 participants. The results of this study indicate that the variable of social media usage intensity (X) plays a role in the empathy variable (Y) of 6.5%. Meanwhile the other 93.5% is influenced by other variables not covered in this study.
