Gender differences in reading maturity for EFL university students / Sri Wahyuningtias

Wahyuningtias, Sri - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
In the past decade the concept of reading maturity which emphasizes students rsquo independence in reading has emerged. However studies specifically addressing reading maturity especially in relation to gender differences among EFL (English as a Foreign Language) university students remain limited. This study explores the relationship between gender and reading maturity and identifies key factors that contribute to high reading maturity score. Using an explanatory sequential mixed-method design quantitative data were collected from 98 EFL university students (71 females and 27 males) through a reading maturity questionnaire based on Thomas rsquo Reading Maturity Survey. This was followed by semi-structured interviews with eight high-scoring students to gain deeper insights into their reading experiences. The questionnaire data were analyzed using SPSS while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed that no statistically significant relationship between gender and reading maturity indicating that gender does not determine reading maturity levels. Instead the five key factors were identified as contributing to higher reading maturity intrinsic motivation and reading engagement consistent reading stimulation structured reading habits and strategies values development from reading and adaptable content preferences. This study contributes to the field by emphasizing that reading maturity is shaped more by individual experiences and motivations than by gender. These insights can guide educators and pre-service teachers in designing reading programs including encouraging the students rsquo personal engagement into reading experiences and reflective practices to support their development as mature readers.
