Effectiveness of social stories method with audio visual media on social interaction and positive behavior in children with autism at the Bhakti Luhur autism therapy unit, Malang / Selvi Marce Pasapan
Abstrak
Social interaction and positive behavior are important aspects in child development with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children with autism often have difficulty understanding social rules communicating and responding to social cues so effective intervention is needed. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Social Story with media/audio-visual in improving social interaction and positive behavior of autistic children at the Bhakti Luhur Autism Therapy Unit Malang City. Social Story with media/audio-visual presented in the form of short narratives through a combination of sound and images or videos that help children understand certain social situations. Each intervention session lasts 5 ndash 10 minutes using devices such as laptops or computers. The results of the study showed that Social Story with media/audio-visual is effective in improving social skills and positive behavior of autistic children. This research uses the method experiment by type of research. It was like an experiment shaped pre-test post-test control group design. Subject The study involved 11 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and divided them into two groups an experimental group and a control group. The instruments used included Autism Social Skills Profile (ASSP) which has been validated using the Aiken V Index. This study uses an observation sheet pre-test and post-test as a data collection instrument to measure changes in children s social interactions and positive behavior before and after the intervention. Wilcoxon test results show a significant difference between pre-test and posttest in the experimental group (p 0.027) indicating an increase in social interaction and positive behavior after the intervention. Mann-Whitney U also showed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups with a U value 0.000 and p 0.006 indicating the effectiveness of the intervention. Based on the research results using the Mann Whitney test and Wilcoxon test through pretest and posttest social interaction and positive behavior it can be concluded that there are differences before and after providing social interaction and positive behavior interventions using social stories with media/audio-visual effectively increasing social interaction and positive behavior of autistic children at the Bhakti Luhur Autism Therapy Unit Malang City.
