Keywords Participatory Action Research Awareness Adolescents Children with Special Needs Persons with disabilities constitute one of the minority groups worldwide with two-thirds residing in developing countries. In Indonesia people with disabilities are also considered a minority group. Lexically a minority refers to a population that is smaller in number compared to the larger population. Apart from numbers minority status can also be viewed from the aspect of power where minorities lack dominant influence or power in society. This condition is often observed by researchers in their residential and working environments. In social life children with special needs are often merely pitied or regarded as burdens. On one occasion when children with special needs participated in activities together with children from regular schools the children with special needs (ABK) received unfavorable treatment from children standing beside them. Those children shouted and moved away unwilling to be near the ABK. Such unfavorable conditions and the prevalence of negative stigma against ABK form the background of this study. This study focuses on 1) the awareness of adolescents at SMAN 1 Durenan towards children with special needs at SLB Negeri Panggungsari Trenggalek Regency 2) the benefits of the collaborative activity ldquo Tembikar (Friends Sharing and Creating) rdquo for children with special needs at SLB Negeri Panggungsari and 3) the benefits of the ldquo Tembikar rdquo collaboration for adolescents at SMAN 1 Durenan. The study aims to enhance adolescent awareness and concern for children with special needs at SLB Negeri Panggungsari through school collaboration activities. The research employs a critical approach that seeks to understand and challenge social conditions that are unjust or unequal. This approach views social reality as the result of conflicting interests between groups that hold power and those that do not. In this study no direct conflict exists between groups however there is an identified social condition that remains unjust toward persons with disabilities as a minority group. By using this critical approach the researcher hopes the study can promote social change toward justice and equality. Participants involved in this study include adolescents attending SMAN 1 Durenan students of SLBN Panggungsari accompanying teachers parents and supporting informants closely related to the research. Data collection techniques included focus group discussions interviews documentation observation and questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted thematically involving stages of data comprehension initial coding theme construction theme review theme definition and naming and report writing. The results of this study reveal that 1) the ldquo Tembikar rdquo collaborative activity increases adolescent awareness and empathy toward children with special needs 2) the collaboration boosts self-confidence among students of SLBN Panggungsari and 3) the collaboration fosters greater concern among adolescents at SMAN 1 Durenan. In conclusion the collaboration between students of SMAN 1 Durenan and SLBN Panggungsari Trenggalek Regency positively impacts adolescents by cultivating sensitivity toward children with special needs (ABK). Through direct interaction adolescents demonstrate increased empathy care and inclusive attitudes. For SLB students the activity builds self-confidence and social interaction skills. Moreover the program broadens the perspectives of teachers and parents and receives support from the local education office representing a tangible step toward inclusive and character-based education.
