Abstrak
Previous research showed that debate improves students rsquo speaking skills and encourages development in critical thinking and argumentation skills. This study investigates the benefits and challenges experienced by students from the English language education study program of Universitas Negeri Malang in using the British Parliamentary Debate (BPD) in their Social and Academic Speaking class. Survey research was conducted employing explanatory sequential design. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and interviews with 53 fourth-semester English Education students at Universitas Negeri Malang in the 2023 academic year. The questionnaire data were analyzed using SPSS to calculate the mean of the data while the data gained from the interview were analyzed using thematic analysis by Miles et al. (2014). The findings show that BPD implies an engaging environment to practice their speaking skill by requiring students to speak and deliver their arguments. Therefore students perceive BPD as an effective method to enhance speaking fluency critical thinking vocabulary mastery and confidence. However students also encountered some challenges that reduced their motivation and speaking performance including limited preparation time unfamiliar vocabulary in motion and difficulty in understanding debate roles such as judge and moderator. The results offer valuable insights for educators to improve BPD implementation and employing other debate systems in future studies.
