Abstrak
The application of translanguaging is widespread in many educational contexts. Nowadays the term translanguaging has gained the attention of some educators as a means to accommodate the learning process. The neutral situation in translanguaging might bring an equal and comfortable atmosphere since there is no limitation on the language used. Many studies have discussed the potential benefits and drawbacks of translanguaging. Limited research focused on translanguaging in a bilingual classroom program with two target languages. Therefore this study presented some objectives to capture how the translanguaging practice is applied during classroom activities in a bilingual classroom program. Then this study highlighted some students rsquo challenges in learning English the reasons for applying translanguaging the bilingual program policy and the advantages and disadvantages of translanguaging. This study employed a qualitative approach to gain a deep understanding of the translanguaging phenomenon. Ethnographic design helped this study to easily capture the cultural patterns of translanguaging practice in a bilingual classroom program. The data were collected through classroom observation and semi-structured interviews. The participants were 1one teacher 1one administrator and 24 students in the 9th grade. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed that students faced challenges in learning English including their lack of vocabulary and grammar and feeling afraid of making a mistake. Two kinds of translanguaging practice found in this study are responding in different languages and discussing using other languages. Then the policy of the bilingual program also took a role in translanguaging practice. There was no written rule of language use in the classroom interactions. Students in this program have different interests in learning languages some choose English and some prefer Arabic as the target language. Based on the findings the advantages of translanguaging are that it helps students grasp the material better in the classroom and helped them to be more effective in the process. The disadvantages of translanguaging are that it might hinder the students rsquo language improvement and cause them to become overwhelmed with the various vocabulary used in the classroom. This study has two limitations. It has limited participants from different educational levels and employed a limited data collection method. Future research should involve not only the teacher students and the administrator. Furthermore future research should use multiple data collection methods and combine quantitative and qualitative data to explore further translanguaging in a bilingual classroom program.
