The effects of topic familiarity on the lexical complexity, accuracy, and fluency in students’ classification essay writing skill / Ulfiana Vilia Wiyanto
Abstrak
Topic familiarity is believed as one of important factors in improving writing quality of the students. The students who have broader knowledge on certain topics are expected to have wider content to write. The quality of the students rsquo writing can be measured through the analysis of lexical complexity accuracy and fluency. Lexical complexity in this study discusses the ability of the students in organizing the lexical items in their writings which is commonly categorized into lexical density lexical sophistication and lexical variation. Accuracy talks about the competence of the students in structuring the error-free clauses. Then fluency measures the ability of the students to produce words in the allotted time. The purpose of this study is to analyze the significant difference between familiar and unfamiliar topic on the lexical complexity accuracy and fluency in the students rsquo writing. The participant of this study were a class of university students that were chosen by using purposive sampling. The instruments used were topic familiarity questionnaire which was aimed at figuring out the students rsquo familiarity level towards several topics and essay writing prompts which were functioned as the writing instructions for the students. The three top unfamiliar topics resulted from the questionnaire was then used as the choices for the students in writing essay with unfamiliar topic. Next the writing prompts helped the students when they write the two essays one essay based on the unfamiliar topic and one essay based on the familiar topic (student-initiated topic). The analysis of the lexical complexity was using web-based lexical complexity analyzer by Lu (2010) which could analyze text based on the elements of lexical complexity such as lexical density sophistication and variation. Then the analysis of accuracy applied the proportion of error-free clause among all clauses and the analysis of fluency was by counting the number of words per writing. The data from the two types of writings was calculated and compared by using SPSS application and T-test calculator to get the statistical description on different effect of familiar topic and unfamiliar topic. The results revealed that topic familiarity gave significant difference in the students rsquo lexical complexity accuracy and fluency. The lexical complexity accuracy and fluency had higher means on topic that the students were familiar with. Despite the all the significant differences between familiar and familiar topic on the lexical complexity accuracy and fluency there are several limitations and recommendation to be highlighted in the future research such as improving the number of the participants considering the mixed methodology for the richness of the data categorizing the topic provision in the topic familiarity questionnaire conducting a test to know the familiarity level of topics doing the spelling correction before inputting the students rsquo writings to the web-based application and the existence of interrater in scoring the students rsquo writings.
