Developing Diana’s House based on flutter to teach vocabulary for elementary school students / Bagas Mutawakkil

Abstrak
The interest of elementary school students in learning English vocabulary is often low due to the use of conventional learning media that are neither contextual nor engaging. In addition the vocabulary taught is frequently irrelevant to the students everyday environment especially those living in rural areas. Therefore there is a need for instructional media that not only presents relevant vocabulary but also engages learners through visual and interactive features. This study aimed to develop an Android-based vocabulary learning application titled Diana rsquo s House designed to facilitate vocabulary acquisition in the context of household objects. The application is intended for fourth-grade elementary students but can also be used by other elementary grade levels. This research employed a Research and Development (R amp D) method using the ADDIE model (Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation). During the analysis stage interviews with teachers and students were conducted along with curriculum and textbook (My Next Words) review to identify learning needs and vocabulary scope. The design stage involved selecting vocabulary based on rooms (living room kitchen bedroom and bathroom) creating a house-themed user interface and designing educational games such as word arrangement object matching and fill-in-the-blank activities. The application was developed using Flutter to ensure compatibility across Android devices. Validation was carried out by media and language experts to assess the feasibility of the display navigation content and linguistic aspects. The validation results indicated that the application achieved a high level of feasibility. The display aspect scored an average of 3.7 ease of use 3.5 prototype organization 4.0 and the linguistic aspect 3.6 on a 1 ndash 4 scale. The implementation was conducted with 14 fourth-grade students at an elementary school in Kraton District Pasuruan Regency. Observations and questionnaire responses showed that students were able to operate the application easily enjoyed learning through games and were motivated to retake the tests to achieve better scores. Students demonstrated increased learning interest because the activities felt like playing rather than formal studying. These findings were discussed with reference to theories of vocabulary learning language acquisition and young learners rsquo characteristics. The application supports contextual and multisensory learning aligned with the principles of comprehensible input (Krashen) repetition and reinforcement (Skinner) and visual-auditory approaches appropriate for young learners. This mobile-based learning also allows students to study independently outside the classroom with or without teacher assistance. In conclusion the Diana rsquo s House application is feasible to be used as a vocabulary learning medium for elementary school students. It helps learners recognize and recall vocabulary in relevant contexts through an interactive enjoyable and user-friendly platform. However some limitations were identified such as the lack of user tutorials unintuitive navigation in certain parts and a limited range of vocabulary focused only on household objects. Therefore it is recommended that future development includes usage instructions expands vocabulary themes and adapts the application for iOS devices and classroom-based teacher use.
