The impact of theatre-based Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs on improving the quality of friendships among elementary school students / Fahmi Zakaria
Abstrak
Friendship quality is an important factor in the social-emotional development of elementary school students. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a theater-based Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program in improving students friendship quality. The study used a quantitative approach with a one group pretest-posttest quasi-experiment design. The research participants were 6th grade students at SDN Sumbersari 3 Malang City. The theater-based SEL program was developed by integrating the CASEL (Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning) framework which includes dimensions of self-awareness self-management social awareness relationship skills and responsible decision-making. Theatre activities such as role-playing and improvisation were used to encourage the development of students social-emotional skills. The results showed that the program significantly improved dimensions of friendship quality such as emotional closeness sense of security and engagement in positive social relationships. The program was also successful in reducing conflict and improving problem resolution skills between friends. This study provides theoretical contributions in the development of arts-based interventions for social-emotional education as well as practical recommendations for teachers and policy makers to improve the social climate in the school environment.
