Cooperative learning to improve the quality of the students\' descriptive writing / Ahmad Nadhif

Abstrak
Despite the significance of writing ability in the walks of life the teaching of writing in University of Kanjuruhan seems difficult to maximize the students ability to write. The class atmosphere which keeps the students work individually and isolated from each other does not much help increase the students learning motivation the key factor in elevating their writing achievement. This research is classroom action research designed to improve the quality of the students descriptive writing through cooperative learning strategy which refers to the instructional use of small groups so that students work together to maximize their own and each other s learning. This strategy is selected because it has been proven through many studies to be able to increase students learning motivation and achievement. The research problem is How can cooperative learning strategy be used to improve the quality of the students descriptive writing The subjects of the study are the students taking writing III in the even semester of 2006/2007 academic year specifically the ones identified as getting the lowest score (1.14 1.14 1.29 1.43 and 1.43) in the English Department of the Faculty of Teaching and Educational Science of Kanjuruhan University. The researcher together with the lecturer design an action based on the principles of cooperative learning strategy and set the criteria of success. The action designed is the implementation of class brainstorming in the prewriting stage simultaneous roundtable in the drafting revising and editing stages and jigsaw in the revising stage before simultaneous roundtable. By comparing to the criteria of success which are the improvement of the subjects writing main score to the level of 2.00 based on a particular writing rubric and the increasing learning motivation of the students the implementation of the action and its results are then reflected on and drawn conclusion from. The findings show that by the implementation of the action the criteria of success are successfully achieved in the end of the first cycle so that the study does not proceed to the next cycle. The final writing score of subject 1 to subject 5 reach 2.71 2.50 2.14 3.50 and 2.64 respectively. Moreover the findings obtained from observation questionnaire and interview show that the students are motivated in doing the writing activities. The study ends up by offering some recommendations. It appeals to the writing lecturers in Kanjuruhan University to develop and implement cooperative learning strategy in their classes as an alternative to the commonly used strategy which keeps the students work individually. Besides future researchers are also suggested to conduct further study on the implementation of cooperative learning strategy aiming at improving the quality of the other types of writing namely narration expository and argumentation. Conducting research on the implementation of cooperative learning in the other language skill classes (reading speaking and listening) is also suggested to them.
