Developing computer assisted language learning instructional material for the Junior High School: a proposed design / Dian Arimurti

Abstrak
Teaching and learning English at the Junior high school has problems especially dealing with the students interests and skills. In the present day the use of computers for teaching and learning language is known as CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning). Most CALL materials are produced in English speaking countries for native English students or sometimes by local people who has not based them on the recent curriculum. Based on those reasons the researcher intends to develop CALL instructional materials which are interactive playful challenging and based on CBC (Competency Based Curriculum). Based on those reasons the problem of this research is what kind of multimedia CD-Rom can help student in learning English either independently or guided by the teacher The purpose is to develop English material in the form of multimedia CD-Rom and based on Competency Based Curriculum for helping students in learning English independently or guided by the teacher. Based on the purpose of this research the material was implemented or tested to the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri Gresik. The Development Model used in this research was the ADDIE model which was developed by Kevin Kruse (IRRI 2003). It is a general purpose model. Besides that it is useful not only for creating instructional products but also for designing the program. The procedures and implementation of the ADDIE model are stated as follows (1) Conduct need analysis to avoid a wrong focus which might not address the school needs to avoid too easy or too difficult material which might cause boredom and frustration for the students and to avoid incomplete redundant or inaccurate content. It is provided by the headmaster the English teacher who knows the students well and the students themselves (2) Design the material based on the student need for English. It has to be learned revealed along with the students educational background interest and motivation existing level of competence in English. Furthermore the questionnaire asks about students English competency level intends to achieve and corresponding teaching material can be established. (3) Develop the courseware. In this step the researcher develops the instructional material first and then develops the multimedia CD-Rom. It is in the form of a prototype which provides a preview. (4) Validate the product by the experts. The instruments for gathering the data are interview and questionnaire. After having correction and feedback from the expert the researcher revises the prototype based on it. (5) Conduct try-out by the researcher to the English teacher and a small number of students at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri Gresik. The first try-out was given to the teacher. In this phase the teacher found out whether the courseware meets did not meet or exceed the checklist items. Next it was given to the students. The researcher finds out the time students need for doing each activity check the student s engagement with the material and detect the points whether the materials might be too easy or too difficult. Through long steps of the developing instructional material finally the material can fulfill the student s need and the curriculum. This courseware consists of narrative instructional material which is presented in reading listening speaking writing grammar and vocabulary. Some good points can be drawn and conclude that using this CD Rom the students can improve their English because it shows attractive and interactive model of learning. Besides that this CD-Rom can be used as a student guide outside the classroom and teacher s teaching aid in language laboratory for teaching speaking and writing.
