Social depiction of Victorian England through Oscar Wilde\'s short stories: a mimetic analysis / Nabhan Fuad Choiron

Nabhan, Fuad Choiron - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
This thesis examines representations of the Victorian era in a series of canon fictions by Oscar Wilde s best five short stories The Happy Prince The Nightingale and The Rose The Selfish Giant The Devoted Friend and The Remarkable Rocket. This study in the tradition of sociological studies which uses mimetic theory especially the basic theory of Plato and Aristotle and Theory Mimetic of Ren Girard assumes that those five short stories at best really portray the social life of Victorian England. This thesis adds to the critical discussion of these texts a focus on which particular images of the Victorian era they produce and to what ends. The Victorian age in which was a transition time between the romantic traditional era and the modern twentieth century era was expanded by a big Industrial Revolution. There were many consequences that are influenced by the Industrial Revolution the social life economic life religious life literature etc. A critical reading of Wilde s best five short stories posits the narrativity of history and the uncertainty of historical knowledge but it shows too that the short stories is infused also with the desire to know and re-create the past. The short stories enter as a double-ent ndre as social criticism and social correction toward Victorian society. Correlated to mimetic theory the short stories depict social condition of society during Industrial Revolution. The gap between the rich and the poor really portray the upper and lower class of Victorian society. The short stories also come with the plot in exploiting the lower class people especially children and women which is so much resemble to the world of Industrial Revolution. The spirit of Christianity is brought there by Wilde as social correction toward Victorian who are so much profound to the revolution. Together these textual analyses demonstrate that the short stories representation of the Victorian era stems from a desire to remember the period as part of our shared history. It describes the society of England especially during the late 19th (nineteenth) century the Victorian Era particularly in terms of the children s life relationship among classes and religion life and how it is useful towards the society at that time as a criticism as well as a companion to the situation of the society at present.
