The use of forms of address in Phantom of the Opera / Dewianti Khazanah

Abstrak
The principle of language usage is determined by the social interaction of the people in a community. Thus the use of language by the speakers might convey the degree of power and solidarity that lie between them. These social realities are conveyed by the speakers use of social deixis the encoding of social distinctions that are relative to the participant-roles particularly aspects of the social relationship holding between speaker and the addressee(s) or speaker and some referents. One of the kinds of social deixis which is used by speakers is form of address. The way the speakers address the addressees can describe the social relationship between them. This research tries to observe the use of forms of address by the characters in the Phantom of the Opera novel. By doing this research the researcher tries to elaborate how the forms of address which are used by the characters explain the dimension of power and solidarity which were created by the author of the novel. This research is analyzrd based on forms of address flowchart which was developed by Ervin Tripp in 1971. The research of the use of forms of address in Phantom of the Opera shows that 1) Title Last Name is used to mark the professional position of the characters in the novel 2) Monsieur Last Name is a sex based forms of address that is used to mark the distance degree of formality and the notion of non-familiarity between characters 3) Madame Last Name is used as the forms of address to set formality setting to woman employees in the opera house and form of address which is dedicated to a respected addressee 4) Mademoiselle Last Name is used to set a formality setting and distance between the speaker and the addressee 5) Kinship Last Name is used to address someone who is considered as a family member 6) First Name is used to refer an inferior strengthen the degree of intimacy between the speaker and the addressee and address someone whose identity is revealed 7) Multiple Names or the terms of endearments are used to show the speaker s sexual intimacy toward the addressee..
