The teaching of reading in efl classes at the state senior high school 5, Malang / Welliam Hamer
Abstrak

This study was aimed at describing the condition of teaching reading at the State Senior High School 5 Malang. It was focusing on the reading materials used by the English teachers the classroom activities especially in teaching reading and the classroom assessments utilized in the reading class. The study was a descriptive case study with qualitative research design. The data collected were in the forms of description of natural phenomena happening in the classroom. The subjects of the study were the five English teachers and the first semester students of Class X.7 Class XI IPA5 Class XI IPS2 Class XII IPS2 and Class XII IPA5 at 2007/2008 academic year. The study applied four techniques of data collection namely observation interview review of documents and recording. Then the collected data were analyzed by using three phases i.e. data reduction data display and conclusion drawing. The result of the study showed that all teachers used (1) textbooks as the main instructional materials (2) the students worksheets as the additional materials and (3) the materials from newspapers magazines leaflets/labels and the internet as the supplementary materials. More specifically the materials used were taken from the textbooks entitled (1) Interactive English Learning for SMA/MA Students (2) Look Ahead An English Course for Senior High School Students and (3) Being Competent in English for Senior High School Students. Meanwhile the additional materials used were from the students worksheets entitled Media Professional Bahasa Inggris and Access to English Competence. Other supplementary materials used were news stories pictures announcements directions on the box of medicines and games taken from the internet. The classroom activities performed in teaching reading included three stages i.e. (1) pre-activity covering greeting checking the students attendance brainstorming and introducing the topic being discussed (2) whilst activity covering administering the instruction clearly asking students to read the text aloud/silently giving modeling facilitating learning community and questioning monitoring the students works giving assignments and giving a chance for the students to present the result of the discussion and (3) post activity covering providing feedback making conclusion or reflection and giving homework. The classroom assessment utilized by all the English teachers in teaching reading was (1) authentic assessments covering oral questions teacher s observations giving assignments and reading aloud (2) formal assessments covering daily tests weekly tests and summative tests.
