The techniques of teaching speaking in the grade eight of the International Class Program at the Laboratory Basic Education State University of Malang / Husnul Khotimah

Abstrak
This study was intended to describe the techniques of teaching speaking materials and media used in the international class at Laboratory Basic Education State University of Malang. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this study was the teachers of the regular and language support class programs in the eighth grade of the international class program. The instruments used to collect data were field notes interview guides and documentations. The findings of this study were as follows. First the techniques and activities of teaching speaking in the regular class were different from those in the language support class program. In the regular class the teacher often integrated the activities of speaking with other English skills and components such as listening reading and grammar and the activities conducted in the class were more formal. On the other hand the techniques of teaching speaking in the intensive class were more fun. The techniques of teaching speaking applied in the regular class of the international class program were drill discussion describing and listening conversation and mini debate. In the language support class program the techniques applied were dictation and games role play watching film and story telling brainstorming and question-answer. Second the materials used in the regular class were based on two curriculums namely the Cambridge curriculum and national curriculum while in the language support class program the teachers had freedom to select the materials. The materials of the regular class and language support class programs were imperative personalities recount texts (a journal and experience) argumentative topics shopping movie and healthy food. Third the teacher used three kinds of media they were visual audio and audiovisual media such as LCD computers whiteboard CD (compact disk) and movies. Based on the result of the study it is recommended that the English teachers be more careful in selecting the kinds of classroom activities for the class maximize the use of computers by the students give more feedback and evaluation for the students at the end of each classroom activity and make the lesson plans. The headmaster and coordinators of the international class need to observe the class once in a while to make sure that the teachers and the students really use English every time provide authentic source of learning such as a native speaker and English videos improve the system and requirements of the new students acceptance. Finally to other researchers need to conduct studies on the use of English by the students in the English in the international class.
