The teaching of engliah at SMP Negeri 1 Malang as an international standard school: a case study / Arina Nugrahani

The Teaching of English at SMP Negeri 1 as an International Standard School a Case Study Thesis Program of Study of English Language Education Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Dra. Mirjam Anugerahwati M.A. Key words teaching English International Standard School. Various methods and strategies have been applied to develop language competence. One of the government strategies to achieve that goal is by establishing International standard School which implements English as the medium of instruction. Using this strategy the selected schools have to apply English as the main language in Science Mathematics and ICT classes.Therefore it is interesting to investigate how International Standard school program which uses English in teaching three lessons above develops students language competence. This study was intended to describe the teaching and learning process of English in the International Standard classes at SMP Negeri 1 Malang. It was expected that the description of this study would be valuable as a feedback for the teacher and school in evaluating whether the goal of the program has been achieved or not. This study was a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects were the International Standard classes of SMP Negeri 1 Malang.of 2007/2008 academic year. The data were obtained from the teacher and the students of International Standard school program. The main instrument in this study was the researcher who was supported by some instruments i.e. observations interview and questionnaires. From the findings it could be concluded that the teacher of International Standard class implements various techniques instructional materials instructional media and asessment in teaching English. The controlled techniques applied by teacher are content explanation reading aloud checking question-answer display review and testing. Semi controlled techniques employed is story telling while free techniques implemented are role-play games problem solving and discussion. Next the textbooks used by the teacher are English Module for Junior High School year 7 Heinemann Games Series English Puzzles 2 and Smart Steps Grade VII. Meanwhile the teacher use ICT media such as LCD computer and internet to support her teaching. She also uses visual media such as picture picture series and flashcards. Lastly the assessments applied by the teacher are on going assessment and peer assessment. She also tries to implement portfolio in her class. Based on the research findings some suggestions were given for the improvement of the teaching and learning processes in International Standard classes. For the school especially the Headmaster and the coordinator of International standard school program they have to give more support to the teachers of English Mathematics and Science of International standard school program to use English consistently during the class and to develop good and complete teaching preparation. For the English teacher of International standard school program she should try harder to increase the quality of the teaching and learning of English by developing a well-arranged module for a semester enhancing her teaching techniques keeping her effort in using English consistently during the class and perfecting the way she administers the assessment especially the authentic assessment.
