Politeness strategies in conversation closing in internet relay chat (IRC) / Sunu Febriawan Prayogo

Abstrak
The purpose of this study is to find out the politeness strategies in conversation closing in (IRC) in the discourse of online environment specifically in IRC channels. The data were collected by logging-in into an IRC channel which is Cafeislam islam malang and surabaya for approximately two hours and then copying the conversations or messages written by the chatters in the channel into the computer hard disk. The written conversations or messages that are taken as data are only the one containing face-threatening act (FTA). The data are analyzed using Brown and Levinson s theory of politeness strategy (1987) and the politeness strategies used to reduce the FTA are grouped into four main strategies Bald on Record Positive Politeness Negative Politeness and Off-the-Record. The data are also analyzed by using Gunarwan s Javanese Principle of Harmony. They are Kurmat/respect andhap asor/modesty empan-papan/place or position conciousness tepa slira/empathy. The results of the analysis show that in this study where it focuses on the conversation closing in IRC the strategies which are mostly used by the chatters are positive politeness negative politeness bald on record and the last is off-the-record. It is quite widely used by the chatters in the IRC in order to show their respect and regard toward the other chatters and also willing to cooperate or when they want to minimize the FTA in disagreeing with others. It indicates that they are trying to keep a good relationship toward other chatters.
