Seeing through Blood Diamond: Western cultural hegemony beneath / Ana Zahida

Abstrak
Culture is one of the most important battlefields for the criss-crossing of interest between nations in the international relationship since culture is a powerful device for implanting ideology and influence. No wonder many nations compete in this field to win and spread their ideological aspect so as to reign powerfully as the major actor in the international relationship by possessing the power to influence others through spreading cultural products. Movie is inevitably one of such powerful devices while Hollywood as the biggest player in this field inescapably is involved in this huge project. Based on the notion above this study was intent on revealing one of Hollywood s movies Blood Diamond. Produced by the most ambitious superpower country USA Blood Diamond perceives others using the perspective of the maker. The perspective used in the movie certainly glorifies the West as the Self while degrades the rest in this case the Third World as the Other. Gramsci s theory of hegemony is used in this study to divulge the hidden agendum which lies beneath the overt idea of the movie for saving the Third World from jeopardy and demolition. This study results in several important aspects supporting the existence of the hegemonic intention of the movie maker through camera movement characterization dialogue costumes and setting. Certainly it empirically proves the effort of the West as the hegemon to sustain their position in the international relationship through winning the consent of the Third World by lulling them using the old white mythology pervasive in the intrinsic aspect of the movie. The result of this study serves as a wake up call for the Third World in general so that they should be lulled no more in the beautiful nightmare of Western hegemonic message of the movie. The critical thinking in galloping western cultural product is deadly significant point of defense besides competing the West by setting up the Third World own story through their own perspective. ---------------------------------- Budaya adalah salah satu kancah peperangan terpenting dari carut-marut kepentingan yang terjadi antar negara dalam pergaulan internasional karena budaya memiliki kuasa maha dahsyat untuk menanamkan ideologi dan pengaruh. Tak heran banyak negara yang bersaing keras dalam bidang ini untuk memperluas jejaring ideology mereka melalui persebaran produk-produk budaya agar menjadi pemenang sehingga dapat meraih peran utama dalam pergaulan internasional karena kuatnya daya pengaruh mereka terhadap negara lain. Tak dapat dipungkiri bahwa film sebagai produk budaya dengan jangkauan luas termasuk ke dalam agen penyebar pengaruh ini. Sedangkan Hollywood sebagai pemain terbesar dalam bidang perfilman tak bisa tidak juga pasti terlibat dalam mega proyek ini. Berdasarkan latar belakang tersebut penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis salah satu film produk Hollywood Blood Diamond. Diproduksi oleh negara Superpower Amerika Blood Diamond bertutur mengenai Afrika melalui perspektif pembuatnya. Perspektif yang dipakai dalam film ini tentu saja memuja Barat sebagai Diri dan merendahkan yang lain dalam hal ini Dunia Ketiga sebagai Si Lain. Teori Hegemony yang dicetuskan Antonio Gramsci digunakan untuk menganalisis dan mengungkap agenda rahasia yang tersembunyi di antara pesan-pesan terang film ini agar menyelamatkan Dunia Ketiga dari kehancuran dan keterpurukan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menggarisbawahi beberapa poin penting yang mengindikasikan adanya niatan hegemonis pembuat film yang ditunjukkan oleh pergerakan kamera karakterisasi dialog kostum dan setting film. Ini merupakan bukti empiris tentang usaha barat untuk menjadi hegemon dalam pergaulan internasional dengan mendapatkan kerelaan Dunia Ketiga dengan cara meninabobokkan mereka dengan dongeng-dongeng tua Mitologi Barat yang tertera jelas dalam sisi intrinsik film ini. Hasil penelitian ini sekaligus berfungsi sebagai alarm yang membangunkan Dunia Ketiga dari indahnya mimpi buruk pesan-pesan hegemonik barat dalam film ini. Pemikiran kritis dalam mencerna produk-produk budaya barat merupakan benteng pertahanan penting dari gencarnya serangan hegemoni barat selain dengan cara melawan barat melalui usaha bercerita melalui perspektif Dunia Ketiga sendiri.
