Key Words reciprocal teaching method improving reading comprehension Reading is one of the language skills which must be taught in English classes of senior high school students. Through the teaching and learning of reading the students are expected to be able to comprehend the reading passages they read. However based on the Preliminary study it was found that the students of MAN Muara Teweh still got some difficulties in finding general information in the passage finding specific information identifying main ideas identifying explicit and implicit information. This condition was caused by several factors such as students low motivation in learning English students lack of vocabulary students low ability in mastering the reading skills the materials of the reading text and the monotonous teaching technique. Accordingly for the improvement of the students reading comprehension ability the implementation of an appropriate method or strategy in teaching reading is urgently needed. Reciprocal Teaching (RT) Method with its four strategies predicting clarifying questioning and summarizing therefore applied to cope with their problem in reading comprehension. This research was designed to improve the students reading comprehension ability in English through the implementation of Reciprocal Teaching (RT) Method. The objective of the research was to improve the students reading comprehension. In RT Method activity students were divided into groups consisting of four students. The students learned how to predict the content of subsequent material clarify difficult words phrases or sentences for others generate questions and summarize the content of what they had read. The research employed a collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher worked together in preparing a suitable procedure of RT Method designing the lesson plan determining of the criteria of success implementing the action observing and doing reflections. The subjects of this research were 40 students of Grade XI IPS 2 at MAN Muara Teweh - Central Kalimantan in the academic year 2008/2009. This research was conducted in 2 cycles each cycle comprised four meetings. The data of this research were obtained through (1) observation sheet to obtain information about teacher s and the students activities and performance during the implementation of RT Method (2) field notes to note the data beyond the coverage of the observation sheet (3) quiz to identify whether the students had made progress in reading comprehension and (4) questionnaire to get information from the students whether the strategy applied could motivate the students to actively involve during the teaching and learning process. The procedures of implementing the RT Method in the teaching-learning of reading comprehension were divided into three stages. The first stage was pre-reading activities the second stage was whilst-reading activities with four strategies predicting clarifying questioning and summarizing and the third stage was post reading activities. The result of the research showed that the RT Method in the teaching-learning of reading comprehension was effective in improving the students reading comprehension. The improvement was indicated by the increase of the students average score throughout the cycles of action that was 53.56 in the preliminary study 58.69 in the test of Cycle 1 and 72.00 in the test of Cycle 2. Besides students were motivated and active in the class using the method in terms of learning to work together and to help each other in a group with different competence which was showed by the result of their works. With the findings it is suggested that teachers use RT Method as one alternative in the teaching of reading comprehension in the classroom and other English instructions to improve the students reading comprehension ability. It is also recommended that the students employ RT Method as a learning method to practice their reading comprehension which can be done for their intra or extra curricular activities. Moreover future researchers are suggested that they conduct a similar study involving higher or lower levels of students such as use the tenth and the twelfth grade students of senior high school level as the subject of the following research.
