The Implementation of the use of english in physics instruction at SMP RSBI Negeri 5 Malang / Puspita Prajarisma

This study was intended to find out the implementation of the use of English in Physics instruction in the pioneering international standard school (Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional/ RSBI) at SMP Negeri 5 Malang. This study is a descriptive case study. The subjects of this study were the students in three pioneering international standard classes Grade VII and the Physics teacher. The instruments used to collect the data were field note interview questionnaires and documentations. The findings showed that the use of English in Physics instruction has fulfilled requirements mandated by Diknas. It was used 20 up to 50% in RSBI classes. The details of the finding in this study were as follows. First the syllabus made by the Physics teacher has met the requirements for the syllabus in the pioneering international standard school mandated by Diknas. Second the lesson plan used by the teacher in teaching Physics in the pioneering international standard school was written in English and mentioned all aspects of teaching. Then the techniques employed by the Physics teacher varied. Next the materials used in Physics teaching were suited to the standard and basic competences mandated by the government. Fifth various media were used by the Physics teacher at the pioneering international standard classes such as TV LCD projector internet real objects realia and apparatus in Physics laboratory. Sixth the Physics teacher assessed her students with two kinds of tests formative test and summative test. Besides the teacher also assessed the students progress. Next the drawbacks of the Physics instruction in the pioneering international standard classes were the teacher s English mastery. The teacher has difficulty in making the Physics lesson plan in English. Besides there were lacks of experiment apparatus in Physics laboratory. Based on the result of the study it is recommended that the school principle complete the experiment apparatus in Physics laboratory and provide laboratory assistant in Physics laboratory. In addition the headmaster also suggested not recruiting more than 24 students in RSBI classes. The Physics teacher is recommended to work harder to increase the teaching quality. The teacher is expected to improve her teaching techniques and improve her ability in making the Physics lesson plan in English. Finally to other researchers who may conduct studies on the similar topic the writer suggests that they conduct research in international standard class for one specific variable only for instance the teaching techniques or the drawbacks of the international standard school. By conducting a more specific study it is expected that the implementation of Physics instruction at the pioneering international standard school program can be analyzed more deeply and intensively.
