Abstrak
ABSTRACT Nur Verry Ardhiana. A Study on the Implementation of English Extracurricular Program at SMP Negeri 1 Malang. Thesis English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Niamika El Khoiri S.Pd M.A. Keywords descriptive study teaching English English extracurricular program SMP A lot of materials to be covered combined with the limited time available in English regular class made it difficult for the teachers to apply many interesting and fun activities. As a result the students might feel bored and not motivated because of the lack of fun activities in learning English. Therefore SMP Negeri 1 Malang conducted English extracurricular program which functioned as a channel for the students who wanted to improve their English ability through the application of fun and interesting activities out of the school s regular time. This study used a descriptive design which was aimed to describe the implementation of English extracurricular program at SMP Negeri 1 Malang. The subjects of the study were the headmaster the vice headmaster for student affairs the English extracurricular teachers the students who joined the program in class VII.1 and VIII.2 and the students of class VII C and VIII D who did not join the program. The instruments used to collect the data were interview questionnaire observation and documentation. The findings of the study were as follows. First the facilities provided by the school were classrooms and language laboratory. However because of some limitations the facilities were considered insufficient to support the activities in the program. Second the media used in the program were whiteboards games cards pictures and worksheets. Third the materials used were developed by the teachers. Some materials used in the program were biography description of something expressions of asking for and giving suggestions simple present tense simple past tense and conversation about Malang Tempoe Doeloe. Fourth some controlled semi controlled and free techniques were implemented in the program such as setting brainstorming interview composition game cued dialog dialogue recitation identification mini-drama story telling and simple debate. Fifth related to the students opinions toward the implementation of the program almost all students supported the implementation of the program in their school. Most of the English extracurricular students said that their English ability had improved since they joined the program. Moreover the students who did not join the program stated that the program was important to be implemented in their school to give a channel for the students who were interested in English. Finally the problems in the program were the class overcapacity at the beginning of academic year the unavailability of program plans and the difficulty of some students to be active in speaking activity because of the low self confidence and limited vocabulary mastery. Based on the result of the study some suggestions are given for the improvement of English extracurricular program s quality. First the principal of the school needs to provide more facilities and overcome the class overcapacity problem. The principal is also suggested to evaluate the program regularly that will be useful for the program improvement. Second it is suggested that the English extracurricular teachers formulize the program plans and use the facilities available. The teachers also need to conduct more various activities in the program. Third the researcher suggests the other schools which conduct or have a plan to conduct the same program to have a careful program plan which consists of the program specific objectives and the program evaluation system. The schools also need to provide the sufficient facilities to support the program implementation. The last the researcher suggests other researchers who are interested in conducting the same research on the implementation of English extracurricular program to observe and analyze deeper on other aspects that have not been explored in this study.
