Keywords Direct Instruction Model Contextual Achievement. SMA Laboraturium UM applies Direct Instruction method in teaching and learning process as stated in the lesson plan for physics. However based on the researcher observation instead of using Direct Instruction method the school use lecturing method that provides one-way communication. This made the students as passive learners since they rarely did experiments. As result the students have some difficulties in stringing up the equipment collecting the data and analyzing the data. Furthermore students achievement in cognitive aspect are also low that can be proved by the students score. Out of the numbers only two students can achieve the minimum completeness standard. Therefore this present research want to know the application of direct instruction method based on contextual approach to improve students achievement of grade XI IPA1 in SMA Laboraturium UM. This research used classroom action research (CAR) methodology that consists of two cycles. Each cycle comprises of four steps that are planning implementation analysis and reflection. First and second cycle is the application of lesson plan using direct instruction method such as building knowledge joint construction feedback and evaluation and the last is individual exercises. The instruments used in this study are lesson plan worksheet pre test and post test and observation sheet. The result of the study shows that cognitive affective and psychometric aspects increase after applying direct instruction method. The cognitive aspect increases on the normalization gain score from 0 31 in the first cycle up to 0 49 in the second cycle. The affective aspect on the teamwork increases from 58 7% in the first cycle up to 75% in the second cycle students activeness increases from 65 7% in the first cycle up to 86 5% in the second cycle punctuation of submit-ting the assignments increases from 60 3% in the first cycle up to 87 5% in the second cycle. The psychometric aspect increases on the result of the experiments from 82 7% in the first cycle up to 94 7% in the first cycle carefulness of measurement increases from 72% in the first cycle up to 89 3% in the first cycle cleanliness and tidiness increases from 72% in the first cycle up to 81 3% in the first cycle and filling the worksheet increases from 94 6% in the first cycle up to 100% in the first cycle.
