Nur Endah Purwaningsih M.Pd Keywords health and safety at work (K3) laboratory Health and safety at work (K3) is a preventive action in minimalizing occupational hazards. This was mostly needed in practical work at clothing laboratory due to the involvement of machinery and some other supporting equipment. Laboratory was a space in which practical work for learning process was conducted therefore every sub 8208 space in the laboratory had distinctive facilities based on their function. Of course those machinery facilities at the clothing laboratory had distinctive procedure for each in order that the safety system was well understood. By giving some materials in related to the health and safety at work maximally it was expected that zero point of accident in clothing laboratory could be achieved. This at one hand was expected to give some preparation for Vocational High School students in facing the real industry world. This study employed the design of descriptive quantitative study which the subject of the study was all students 10thgrade majoring in clothing department 2008/2009 of Public Vocational High School 5 Malang. The data collecting technique employed was using questionnaire which had already passed validity and reliability test by using percentage analysis. While the type of the sample used was population sample. The objective of this study was to know the students knowledge of health and safety at work the needed equipments for K3 at the clothing laboratory the understanding of signs of K3 and the environment state of affair of clothing laboratory at Public Vocational High School 5 Malang. The result of the study showed that (1) the knowledge of students about health and safety at clothing laboratory at this public school was included in the high category which is in the interval 47 8208 55 that is 34 8%. Yet the improvement was still needed especially for the regulation of the health and safety at work the discipline in obeying the rules at the clothing laboratory the knowledge about sewing equipment especially in how used them in the correct and safe manner the ability in preventing infection and decease due to the sitting method (2) the outfit of health and safety at clothing laboratory in this public school was high in the interval 50 8208 60 with percentage 40% 8208 8208 yet the betterment was still needed in the term of utilizing hand protective equipment understanding about the use of light extinguisher (APAR) and medicine in the first aid box (PPPK) (3) signs of health and safety at the clothing laboratory showed good result which is 50% for the interval 38 8208 41 this only for recognizing labels or dangerous signs however for the goal of establishing the health and safety poster in the clothing laboratory was still needed for improvement (4) the environment state affair was also high which was 55.55% in the interval 42 8208 48 yet the improvement in the aspect of air circulation organizing the placement of the machines and equipments and the cleanliness of the laboratory. Based on the result of the study it was suggested that teachers must make improvement in the scope of the teaching materials about health and safety at work correspond to the development of the technology. Those materials included regulations equipments of the health and safety at laboratory and their usage. Students were expected more open toward the large knowledge by reading and learning from some references about health and safety at laboratory.
