ABSTRACT Rosaline Meda. 2009. Capitalist Oppression on a Working Single Mother in Dawn Anna a Television Movie. Thesis. English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Evi Eliyanah M.A. Key Words Capitalist Oppression Working Single Mother Dawn Anna Today what is considered as the most powerful media to influence the society is television since it produces popular cultural texts more than any other media and has immense share of audience (Barker 2008). Television can deliver what is produced either global or local idea images representation or even propaganda to every single head of people right into their bedroom or living room. Thus the media pundits are trying hard to create various interesting programs such as television movie program. One of well-known television movies in the United States of America is Dawn Anna. This television movie tells about Anna a working single mother who has to struggle to face various obstacles in life so that she can maintain her family subsistence. The focus of this study is to analyze how the narration or the story of Dawn Anna represents the oppression of capitalism on working single mothers. The story will be interpreted using Marxist feminism perspective. This study has proven that even in a television movie which is well accepted by the society not degrading the dignity of woman and giving such huge encouragement to the society the capitalist oppressions on woman does present through several ways. The first is through positioning Anna as a gear in a tickling clock of capitalism the second is thorough positioning her as a proletariat and the last is through positioning her as a working single mother. Furthermore the effects of such oppression are also presented as obvious as the oppression itself. Anna s sickness and the take over duty by her children are two clear samples of it.
