Application of Direct Instruction with Contextual Approach to Improve Students Achievement in Class VIIIA UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Gampengrejo Kabupaten Kediri in Academic year 2008/2009. A paper the physics department. University of Malang. Supervisors (I) Drs. Sumarjono (II) Drs. Asim M.Pd. Key word direct instruction contextual approach students achievement. Based on the result of the observation found that the teaching learning process of physics in class VIIIA UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Gampengrejo was carried out conventionally and students were passive. The result of interview with physics teacher showed that the students comprehension of physics was low it can be seen on how many students joined in remedial exam to get the passing grade and the independency of students on learning was low. From the description above it needed improvement in teaching learning process using direct instruction with contextual approach. It is hoped that the students achievement in physics improves. This research is a class action research using direct instruction in physics class on the topic light. It is conducted in two cycles each cycle consist of 2 meetings for four teaching periods. The subject of this class action research is the 39 students of class VIIIA UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Gampengrejo Kab. Kediri. The research is carried out in even semester academic year 2008/2009. The data got is the students achievement including three aspects which are cognitive affective and psychomotor and teaching leaning process and field note. The cognitive aspect is measured from the students score affective and psychomotor got from observation in cycle 1 and cycle 2. The improvement of students achievement can be seen from the result of test in cycle 1 and cycle 2. The improvement of the cognitive aspect between cycle 1 and cycle 2 is 69 64 becomes 82 64 which has criteria good becomes very good. The improvement of the affective aspect between cycle 1 and cycle is 47 6% becomes 60 09% which has criteria fair becomes good. The improvement of the psychomotor aspect between cycle 1 and cycle is 57 35% becomes 70 06% which has criteria fair becomes good. Based on the result of this class action research it can be concluded that direct instruction with contextual approach can improve students achievement of class VIIIA UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Gampengrejo Kab.Kediri.
